Abstract
Background and Objectives : The aim of study is to investigate the actual condition of newborn hearing screening in Korean obstetrics and gynecology (OBGY) clinics.

Materials and Methods : A questionnaire survey was conducted at nationwide more than 20 delivery per month OBGY clinics (755 hospitals) from April 1st through June 30th, 2007. We have distributed checklist papers and collected the results later. We checked if they had received the papers and had newborn hearing screening (NHS) devices by phone call.

Results: In the 755 OBGY hospitals, 283 hospitals (37.5%) have answered that they had NHS devices, which they could do screening test about 60% of all childbirth in 2006 year. Total number of answered hospitals was 113 (39.9%). The most common NHS device was Algo series (Natus Medical Inc., CA, USA£º57%) of which test mode is only automated brain-stem response (AABR), so most hospital have more conducted AABR mode (68.1%) than automated otoacoustic emission (AOAE) mode. Most hospital mainly had purchased NHS device from 2002 through 2005 and come to 78.1% of the whole devices until 2005 year. They hardly ever checked regularly NHS devices (0.9-17.5%) and many hospitals used to check devices when it was abnormal or broken (23.7%). The time of primary NHS was mainly before discharge (78.8%) and for average repeat test number of referred neonates, three times was the first highest number (50.4%), two times was the second (20.4%) and four times was the third (16.8%).

Conclusion: For Korean universal neonatal hearing screening tests, it is important to conduct quality control of NHS devices and test performing persons including standard protocol and primary OBGY hospital based education programs.
